Project Overview
Saltire were engaged by Water Corporation to assist in locating internal features and determining the direction of existing pipework along Pioneer Road in Byford. The primary goal was to obtain highly accurate measurements to support an upcoming cut and cap installation on the water main, and to identify the capping point, direction of travel, and service connection for the local Coles shopping centre.
Client:Water Corporation
Scope:Identification of internal assets, direction of travel of the water main and service connection points for a local shopping centre

Key Elements
Saltire deployed our in-house live inspection and hot tapping technologies to access the DN150 water main without requiring isolation or drain down. This approach ensured uninterrupted water supply to the local Coles supermarket and surrounding retail outlets.
The first live camera inspection identified a DN150 to DN100 reducer 11.85 metres from hydrant WH084231, followed by a 45-degree bend 13.35 metres from the same hydrant. This confirmed the main’s direction of travel beneath the car park. By using this method, Saltire eliminated the need to remove approximately 20 metres of pedestrian walkway.
The second inspection revealed that the water main was travelling in the opposite direction to that indicated in the original plans. It also identified the precise location of a 90-degree bend, a gate valve, a dead plate at the end of the main, and the tapping point for the metered connection servicing the Coles shopping centre.
Significant Achievements and Benefits
The project was completed without the need for isolation or drain down, preventing any disruption to the nearby shopping centre and surrounding retailers. Saltire’s approach also removed the need for unnecessary excavation, with live access to the water main achieved through a single 1 metre x 1 metre pothole using hot tapping and live camera insertion. This pothole was backfilled and repaved within 8 hours, ensuring there were no ongoing safety risks to pedestrians. The accurate measurements provided by Saltire enabled Water Corporation to precisely locate the main and associated infrastructure, allowing for more efficient and cost-effective planning of future works without the need for additional excavation, traffic management, or shutdowns.

Live Water Mains Inspection
Advanced live inspection technology detects issues in pressurised pipelines—maintaining network integrity without isolations, shutdowns, or service disruption.

Hot Tapping
Saltire Infrastructure utilises high-pressure rated Hot Tapping Equipment for the fast and safe installation of new branch connections and bypass mains, with the current capability to install DN25-DN400 offtakes.

Flow Stopping
Line Stopping allows works to be undertaken on water mains without interruption to customer supply. Deploying a stopper and bypass system, the rig set-up allows for sections of pipelines to be made dry allowing safe repair or replacement of the existing network.

S-Gate Valve
Saltire Infrastructure’s S-gate Valve System is a WSAA-approved live insertion valve system, designed to be used on live under pressure pipelines, providing mechanical isolation on the network to operator’s requirements and a future asset on the pipeline network to be used time and time again.
