Bell St Bridge Internal Pipeline Condition Assessment

Project Overview

Saltire were engaged by ADE Consulting Group, on behalf of Yarra Valley Water, to undertake an internal pipeline condition assessment of a DN600 Wrought Iron and MSCL water main located beneath the M4 Bell Street Bridge. The project was initiated after an external condition assessment identified corrosion on the weld collars, prompting a more detailed internal inspection to better inform future maintenance, refurbishment, or repair planning.

Key Elements

The internal inspection focused on assessing the condition of the weld collars beneath the M4 Bridge, with no existing access point available to launch the inspection equipment. This created logistical challenges, particularly due to the pipeline’s proximity to a high-traffic roadway. Saltire collaborated with the client to address these complexities, including facilitating the required excavations and traffic management measures to enable safe access. The client also managed the hot tapping to create a suitable launch point for the inspection camera, allowing Saltire to conduct a detailed internal inspection.

Significant Achievements and Benefits

Our team

successfully surveyed 265 metres of pipeline, capturing detailed data and providing clear insights into the key areas of concern. Minor defects were identified during the inspection, but the overall condition of the pipeline was confirmed to be sound. No leaks were detected throughout the process, and the project was completed without any safety incidents. A comprehensive asset condition assessment report was delivered to the client, equipping them with essential information for future planning and decision-making.
