Halls Head Hot-tapping and CCTV Live Inspection

Project Overview

Due to the critical importance of the DN600 pipeline in Apollo Pl, Halls Head, as a primary water supply for the south Mandurah region impacting over 30,000 customers, Water Corporation prioritised an inspection to confirm the integrity of the two transitional joints between asbestos cement and polyethylene, and to precisely locate this asset, which runs beneath the canal. Saltire was contacted for this task.

Upon site assessment, we found no available access point for launching the camera system. To address this, we proposed and executed a hot-tap on the main, installing a DN100 valve and riser up to the surface. Using the Flowrider Lite equipment, we successfully conducted the inspection over a distance of 261 meters, covering the entire section of the pipe under the canal.

Key Elements

  • Flow was observed traveling south, and the survey followed this direction. The survey ended at 261m, reaching the full camera tether distance. The transition from AC to PE pipe was identified at 104m (north of the canal), and from PE to AC at 196m (south of the canal). Both transition points are in good condition, with minor to moderate corrosion in ductile fittings.
  • No acoustic anomalies were detected, and the spectrogram indicated no leaks during the survey.
  • Slight corrosion observed in bends and low levels of corrosion found in ductile fittings.
  • Survey allowed the client to update as-constructed information on the main alignment.* The water mains were located based on the Australian Standard AS5488 for Subsurface Classification (QL-B / SUI Level B).
