Caves Road DN560 Water Main Upgrade, Busselton WA

Project Overview

To support future growth and improve network capacity, Saltire was engaged as a water infrastructure and pipeline contractor to deliver the Caves Road Water Mains Upgrade, involving the supply, construction and commissioning of approximately 1.2 kilometres of DN560 water main between Lennox Drain and Marybrook Drain.

The new alignment traversed a constrained and sensitive corridor, including a Main Roads WA reserve, an Aboriginal heritage site and multiple private properties. To minimise environmental and community impact while maintaining safety and traffic flow along a busy regional road, the majority of the works were delivered using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a trenchless pipeline construction method, supported by targeted open excavation for tie-ins and ancillary works.

Client:Busselton Water
Scope:DN560 Water Main Upgrade – Supply, Construct & Commission
Value:$3.2M

Key Elements

  • Detailed project planning and constructability reviews undertaken collaboratively with Busselton Water and delivery partners
  • Installation of approximately 1.2 km of DN560 water main, predominantly via HDD to reduce surface disruption
  • Hydrofracture risk assessment and drill profile optimisation to mitigate ground risk
  • Localised groundwater management, including draw-down spear installations and monitored drainage
  • Poly welding and mechanical installation, including valves, fittings and network tie-ins
  • Traffic management planning and implementation along Caves Road to maintain public safety and access
  • Stakeholder engagement with private landowners, Main Roads WA and Aboriginal heritage representatives
  • Pressure testing, pipeline commissioning and verification of the new main prior to handover

Significant Achievements and Benefits

Despite the complexity of the corridor and live environment constraints, Saltire successfully delivered the project on time, within budget and with zero safety incidents. The upgraded main now provides increased capacity and resilience for the region’s water supply network, while the trenchless delivery approach significantly reduced environmental impact and community disruption.

This project was recognised with the 2025 Earth Award for Excellence in Civil Construction (WA).
